The SPIDIA consortium had been formed by merging the complementary expertise of the different consortium partners. The ambitious goals set out in SPIDIA’s programme needed an integrated and structured multidisciplinary approach combining standardisation expertise, clinical chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, pathology, biobanking and NMR spectroscopy, discovery of pre-analytical tools for in-vitro diagnostics, metabolomics, management, training and ethics. In addition to expertise, SPIDIA included a critical mass of partners having a broad scope of influence in order to ensure a significant contribution to standards and the effective dissemination of these afterwards.
